Change.
To the spiritual core of us, change and growth is what life is all about.
When we are purely spirit, there is no duality, no tension. No strife, no struggle. Sounds ideal, doesn’t it? Milk and honey all the time. But guess what? In that stress-free, singular environment, there is no growth. No learning, no lessons. In order to develop and grow as beings, we decide to come to play on Earth – in a body.
The body is an amazing companion for us. Immediate feedback in the form of sensations and emotions gives us tremendous information. This is true whether we are fully aware and attentive or whether we are on autopilot and are asleep to the truth of who we are.
So we come to a place of duality, to learn a lesson. Maybe we desired to be more compassionate; maybe we desired to understand another point of view. Perhaps we wanted to learn about pain, or about giving or taking. There are simply an infinite number of lessons and choices!
So now that we are here in this magnificent place of duality and choice, we often find ourselves in pain. Why is that?
Spirit has come here to change and grow. However, to the physical body, stability is king. The physical body craves comfort and the known – so whenever the lessons come, the body often grows fearful and worried. Combine that with the growing pains of the lesson being learned, often the body finds itself hurting on many levels and having to communicate this pain to its trusted companion, the spirit.
But guess what? Spirit detests pain. Even though it craves growth, our spiritual selves will run and hide from pain if given any opportunity to do so. So when the body communicates its messages to the spirit, if there is any pain involved, the spirit will check out, in part or in whole.
What a great dance! The spirit wants to learn, the body goes into pain, and the spirit leaves. Round and round we go, finding ourselves craving growth and at the same time fighting the growth we’ve created.
However, there are ways to deal with the changes we’ve created!
First of all – humor heals the deepest wounds! If you can find any way at all to laugh at the pickle you’ve gotten yourself in, you’re more than halfway to the solution. Then, the real healing can be available to you!
Second – don’t beat yourself up for being in a situation where you don’t yet feel you know all the answers! The whole purpose of growth is to learn, explore, and evolve. If we had fully developed already, there would be no reason for the duality and evolution. So validate and encourage yourself for the decision to learn and grow. It truly takes a magnificent heart to take on whichever lesson you’re in. You are more than equal to it!!!
Third – be still with your body and emotions and just listen. Listen, watch, and let it go. As paradoxical as it may seem, if you as spirit are able to be present with your body – who is your faithful companion – without judgement, without fear, but simply listening to the messages without fighting them or resisting them, something very wonderful happens. Peace starts to set in because you have decided to let go of fighting the body’s messages. Not only that, but once you start to realy be present with the body without judging it for being a body, it will start to let go of its pain! It becomes reasured and trusting of you as spirit, and begins to allow more change. The spirit can then be even more present with the body.
It’s a beautiful, upward spiral!
Finally – and most important – BE GOOD TO YOU! If you remember nothing else when you are dealing with a change or feeling stuck, remember to treat yourself well. You are the only person on the entire planet just like you, and you have amazing gifts and talents that nobody else has. You are deserving of love just for being you. You don’t have to be perfect in order to love yourself and be kind to yourself – and it is so much more fun to learn and grow when you are feeling validated!
These four practices can and will develop over time. You won’t instantaneously drop all your fear and become giggly and happy – but in a relatively short amount of time, you can develop the ability to be present, kind, humorous and validating. Be gentle and easy with yourself as you’re growing!
